About Us
Calumet Community Center is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide educational, recreational, and support services to residents of West Oak Cliff regardless of race, creed, color, or ethnicity.

The vision for Calumet Community Center was formed following an 18-month study of the daily reality of 4,000 Hispanic families living in the West Oak Cliff and Cockrell Hill sections of the Dallas metroplex. Needs which surfaced most quickly during the home visits and neighborhood meetings were related to children, youth, and family support.

The most serious gap in services was in recreation programs, tutoring and mentoring opportunities, and the availability of a safe haven where children could play.

Following the study, a community driven project was established to address the needs of this community. A donation of 48 acres of land, on a hillside near the intersection of West Davis Street and Cockrell Hill Road gave a concrete form to the vision. The site was used to establish a Catholic Church and School, along with the Community Center. Calumet Community Center became a separate legal entity in 1994, and after a successful three million dollar capital campaign, construction began on the community center in 1996.

The doors opened in August 1997.
